ABOUT COLLEGE

Introduction

The College of Human Ecology combines theoretical and applied approaches to address human concerns from the ecological perspectives. Selected physical and behavioral sciences in conjunction with liberal and creative arts are used to study how people interact with each other and their environments.
There are five departments in the college: Clothing and Textiles, Foods and Nutrition, Interior Architecture and Built Environment, Child and Family Studies, and Human Environment and Design.
Four research institutes are associated with the College of Human Ecology; the Human Ecology Research institute, the Research Institute of Foods and Nutritional Sciences, the Research Institute of Clothing and Textile Science. The college has close ties with the Child Development Research Institute affiliated with the university. Through the research, education, and service activities of the institutes, the College of Human Ecology contributes to improve the quality of life.

 

History

The College of Human Ecology was established in 1963 as the first 4-year College of Home Economics in Korea. It began with 3 departments: Clothing and Textiles, Foods and Nutrition, and Housing and Interior Design. The Departments of Child and Family Studies was opened in 1972. In 1989, the decision was made to change the name of the college to the "College of Human Ecology" in order to reflect the broader philosophy embodied in the changing nature of the college and of society. In 1996 Human Environment and Design was evolved to fulfill the necessity of the design area. Since 1996, College has operated five majors: Clothing and Textiles, Foods and Nutrition, Interior Architecture and Built Environment, Child and Family Studies, and Human Environment and Design.

The College of Human Ecology at Yonsei has been in the forefront of the fields in Korea since its inception in 1964, and its mission today is to train the future leaders not only of Korea, but also of the world in the fields of improving the quality of individual and family's everyday lives. With the core value and future-aimed vision for the age of information oriented society and globallization, the College provides its students with a unique, top-rate interdisciplinary education and research program with special emphasis on practical experiences.
